Located on the south west corner of Barbados this lighthouse
is the second oldest lighthouse in Barbados which was built in 1855. It
is the only one Octogon in shape. The roof and surround of the superstructure
appear to be made of copper sheeting. It was a stationary light and not
rotating like the others. Half of the light was red and the other green
so that vessels approaching Carlisle bay could tell if they were to to
port or starboard of the bay.
It ceased to operate when the Hilton was erected and it was said that
a light was to be placed on top of the hotel to replace it. However it
is not known whether this happened. The lighthouse was to be rumored to
be used as storage space for unused material by the Hilton. Currently
the lighthouse is missing some glass in the upper casings. After the demolition
of the Hilton I personally visited the lighthouse myself and was surprised
to find it open unlike the others which are kept locked. Upon entrance
to go up top I was quite shocked that there was no staircase to do so,
and there was a pool of water in the bottom. Needham's point Lighthouse
also seem sto have been restored at least on the outside. With the rebuilding
of the Hilton hotell the Needham's point lighthouse has a fresh coat of
paint on the outside band looks very nice. |
