Gordon's Lighthouse , South point, Barbados. |
![]() |
Erected in 1852 it was one of 3 cast iron lighthouses to ever be made. And perhaps one of the last in existence. This lighthouse was first exhibited and erected in may thru october of 1851 at the great Hyde Park exhibition in London. It was then taken apart and shipped to Barbados in parts and went into service on the 12th of April 1852. It was estimated that the cost at the time was 5,227 Pounds, as in English currency. It is located on the southern most point of Barbados in an area called Atlantic Shores or South point. It has a 6th order rotating power beam beacon (mark II ) with a LC 6 automatic Lampchanger, photoelectric switch, control panel with test switch, constant volt battery charge and 6-volt lead/acid batteries. It is 145 feet above sea level, it has a range of approximately 18 miles, has a group flashing 3every 30 seconds and stands itself 90 (27m) feet. Currently it is in need of desperate restoration as can be seen from the bottom right photo taken in 2000. You can see the rust from the iron and salt air in the earlier pictures. There were also steel straps placed some time back perhaps to strengthen the lower part of the structure due to it perhaps weakening or cracking. However over the past couplebof years a local construction company has restored and painted the lighthouse. |
